Planning a week without over-planning it

The planner's job is to produce a shopping list from a set of meals, not to schedule every evening. Two things make the difference between a plan that runs and one that is abandoned on Wednesday: fewer meals than there are days, and meals that share ingredients. Cover five dinners and keep a fallback in the freezer rather than covering seven and failing on the day that everything runs late.

Use what you already have first

Before adding anything, list what is already in the fridge, freezer and cupboard that needs eating. Two of the week's meals should come from that list. This is the step that turns a meal plan into a saving rather than an extra shopping trip, because it spends food that would otherwise be thrown away.

Build overlap deliberately

Three dinners sharing one bag of onions, one tray of chicken and one bag of rice is a shorter and cheaper list than three dinners with nothing in common. The overlap is the plan; the recipes are the detail. When you choose a recipe, note the quantities in weights, since the quantities are what the shopping list is built from.

Where the plan goes wrong

Buying perishables for the whole week at once, which guarantees that the last two days are cooked from whatever survived; forgetting that one evening will be busy; and planning meals nobody in the household likes, which ends the experiment quickly. Plan the food you already enjoy, in the quantities your household eats, and let the plan make the week easier rather than more virtuous. To price the result, use the grocery budget calculator; to print the list, use the free printables.
